Auditions for the 22nd Annual Fall Musical "Seussical the Musical" at Shawnee Community College will be on Friday and Saturday, September 3rd and 4th. Friday's auditions will be from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday's auditions will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude by noon. Southernmost Illinois Delta Empowerment Zone (SIDEZ) Celebrates 11 Year Anniversary, Sept. 16th. The Southernmost Illinois Delta Empowerment Zone (SIDEZ) invites the public to attend the SIDEZ 11 Year Celebration at Shawnee Community College on September 16, 2010. Shawnee Community College Signs Nursing Articulation Agreement with McKendree An articulation agreement signed on Aug. 31 by officials from McKendree University and three southern Illinois community colleges significantly increases educational opportunities for nursing students throughout the region.
McKendree now offers dual enrollment, a guaranteed tuition rate, and the acceptance and application of credits to nursing students at Shawnee Community College.

Shawnee's Bradley Scores High on the Air  Craig Bradley, known to some as KD9MS, scored 9th in the United States and Canada and 24th out of 955 entries in the world for single operators running low power in the American Radio Relay League DX contest. SCC Receives Department of Education Grant  Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced earlier this month that Shawnee Community College has received a $293,864 grant through the Student Support Services Program of the U.S. Department of Education. These funds will help provide academic and other support services to low-income, first-generation or disabled college students to increase students' retention and graduation rates, facilitate their transfer from two-year to four-year colleges, and foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of these students. Got Talent: Art Scholarship Recipients Included in the wave of first-year students at Shawnee Community College are five talented artists from throughout the district. The students were among the dozens of students who submitted their art work in hope of obtaining one of five art scholarships offered at SCC. SCC Sees Historic Enrollment For over 40 years, district high school graduates have chosen Shawnee Community College to further their education. This year is certainly no exception. "For the first time in the college's history, 50% of recent graduates from our twelve district high schools are enrolled for the fall semester at SCC," Dr. Larry Peterson reported during the annual fall faculty meeting on Monday. In 2004, fewer than 25% of area high school class of 2004 seniors attended SCC. "Our district high schools are the foundation of our enrollment," Peterson added. Shawnee Community College adult education program will offer employment based instruction beginning September 7, 2010, in room J2050 located on the main campus near Ullin. The courses include basic skills, employability skills, life skills, basic computer skills, and health care technical skills.
Classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. Pre-test required for entry. There is no cost to students and childcare and transportation reimbursement options are available. For more information and to arrange test date, call 800-481-2242, extension 3222 or 3266.

SCC Hosts School Supply Drive Once again, the Shawnee Community College Future Teachers Organization is collecting school supplies for area children. Last year school supplies were delivered to 13 schools.
Members of the organization collect supplies from students, faculty, staff, and the community. "In this economy there are more children than ever that will show up for the first day of school without the supplies they need to start the year off successfully," said Sharon Walker, education instructor at SCC and faculty sponsor of the Future Teachers Organization. "This is just one of the things we do to help promote education."

Youth Leadership Academy Celebrates 10 Years For the ten years, area high school students have gathered each summer for the Shawnee Community College Youth Leadership Academy. District high school guidance counselors nominate students for the program, which is sponsored by the SCC Adult Education department. Students completing the program receive a certificate good for a three credit hour course at Shawnee College. Students attend the academy at no cost to the student or their high school. More... |
