Applied Viticulture

The Viticulture Technology Program is a one-year certificate is designed to prepare  students to potentially become an owner/operator of a vineyard or seek a career in a commercial vineyard.  Topics include current practices for establishing a commercial vineyard while maintaining its health ad productivity.  The practical field experience feature leads the student through the entire growing season from pruning in early spring to harvest in the summer.

The Coursework

 

VIN 111 Vineyard Establishment & Maintenance

The course introduces students to practices establishing commercial vineyards and maintaining health and productivity.  Topics covered include varietal selection, site preparation, equipment, site selection, first season establishment, vine growth development and training, trellis systems, vine propagation, weed control, vine disease control, and pruning.

 

VIN 113 Spring Viticulture Technology

The course provides students with a seasonal extension of practical viticulture covered in VIN 111 and serves as actual practical exposure and experience for those seeking employment in commercial viticulture.

 

VIN 115 Summer Viticulture Technology

The course provides students initiated with a seasonal extension of the practical viticulture covered in VIN 113.  The content has been selected to serve as a foundation to those who seek to further their training in this area of alternative agriculture, and includes all those topics and activities performed in commercial vineyards during the summer. 

 

VIN 213 Midwest Vineyard Management

The course serves as an in depth study of commercial grape growing in the Midwest of the United States.  Topics include detailed study of vine physiology, vineyard soils, climatic factors, balanced pruning, intergrated pest management, and advanced canopy management.
