Early Childhood Education ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE Early childhood educators
encourage the development of young children, ages 0-8 years, with guided
experiences and environments.. The program provides
students with the background in child development and general studies necessary
for a career in early childhood education and childcare. It prepares students
for employment as directors, teachers and assistants in child care programs,
Head Start and school-age programs. It also provides preparation for teacher
aides in the Illinois public schools, grades Pre-K – 12 and special needs programs. For More Information

the Child Development Associate (CDA) requirements with CDA advisor approval. Students should complete the coursework in the order presented

ECE 101 Intro to Early Childhood Education Provides
an overview of the history and philosophy of the different types of early
childhood care centers and educational settings for young children and their

114 Child Growth & Development The course focuses
on the physical, cognitive, language, creative, and social/emotional aspects of
the young child’s development. ECE 126 Curriculum for Preschool
Program Study
of the principles and concepts underlying curriculum planning for preschool programs. ECE
127 Child, Family & Community Child
in the context of family and community, concentrating on the educator’s role in
building relationships with the child’s family and community. ECE 128 Child Guidance/Discipline Reviews
the theories and practices of effective methods of guiding children’s behavior

ECE 129 Assessment in Early Childhood Education Authentic
assessment as the core for teaching and learning in the early childhood
setting.
ECE 199 Early Childhood Education Internship To provide
on-the-job-training in early childhood education in an approved setting
practicing the principles, skills, and techniques developed in previous
courses. ECE 215 Language Arts for the Young Child Introduces
students to content and teaching methodology in the area of language arts. ECE
216 Art/Music Activities Provides
knowledge and application of practices that promote creative activities
appropriate for the young child. ECE
217 Science/Math Activities Provides
knowledge and application of practices that promote science and math activities
appropriate for the young child.

Young Child Provides
knowledge and application of practices about current concepts in the areas of
health, safety, and nutritional needs and their relationship to the young child
in a group setting.

knowledge in ECE 221 An
examination of current trends in organizing and administering a child care
