Associate of Arts Degree

The Associate of Arts Degree is designed for a student who is interested in a liberal arts bachelor’s degree.  AA degree students will only take one math class and two science classes.  Their elective hours will contain liberal arts classes.  This is a more versatile degree, with fewer math and science classes.

The Arts & Sciences Curriculum

Communications

AA & AS students are required to take 9 credit hours of courses in this area.  Students must earn a minimum of a “C” in each course.

Fine Arts/Humanities

AA & AS students are required to take 9 credit hours of courses in this area.

Social Sciences

At least 9 credit hours of courses need to be taken for both AA & AS students from at least two different disciplines.

Mathematics:  

AS students must take at least 8 credit hours of mathematics courses.  AA students are required to take only 3 credit hours.  MAT 115/116/118 may be necessary for some majors however will not count as a general education requirement. 

Science 

AS students are required to earn 12 credit hours in this area.  AA students must complete 7 credit hours of coursework.  Courses taken must include at least one Life Science and Physical Science course and one class must contain a lab.

Electives

Elective classes must be chosen from transfer courses listed in the “Course Descriptions” section of the College Catalog.  Elective requirements are 25 hours for AA and 16 hours for AS.

 

Total hours for AS/AA degrees must equal at least 64 hours. Please consult an advisor prior to enrolling.

 

 

 

Getting Started

1.     Complete an admission information form on the Main Campus, at an SCC Extension Center or online at www.shawneecc.edu

2.     Complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online at www.FAFSA.ed.gov or contact the SCC Financial Aid Department at 800 481-2242 or 618 634-3200.

3.     Contact the Student Success Center or a local SCC Center to schedule a placement test

4.     Make an appointment with an academic advisor to register for classes

 

 

 

Testing Requirements

All students enrolling at Shawnee College for the first time will be required to take a placement test.  This test is free of charge and will help determine a student’s skill level in reading, writing and mathematics.  The assessment results will be used to place the student in the appropriate levels of these courses.  The goal is for students to be enrolled in classes that are challenging, but not overwhelming.  All course placements are mandatory.  Tests may be scheduled at our Main Campus or any of the Extension Centers in Anna, Cairo or Metropolis.    Note: Any student who scores 21 or higher on the ACT is exempt from taking a placement test.

 

Grants & Scholarships

At Shawnee Community College, your dreams are affordable.  SCC offers one of the lowest tuition rates of any community college in Illinois.  We also offer our students a chance to apply for over 40 scholarships unique to the College.  Financial aid is also available to SCC students.  Approximately 70% of our students receive grants, scholarships or other financial assistance.  Students are also encouraged to apply for the student work programs offered through the financial aid office.

The Illinois Articulation Initiative

 

·        Students who follow IAI recommendations and consult with their academic advisor are more likely to transfer without losing credits.

·        Students who complete a prescribed set of general education courses can transfer the coursework and have it accepted in lieu of general education course requirements.
