COURSE DESCRIPTION: Development of a medical vocabulary through
the study of word construction, spelling and pronunciation, medical
abbreviations and symbols, and use of terminology in correspondence and reports
used in the medical profession is presented.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of
this course, the student should be able to:
1. Spell, define, and combine medical
roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
2. Identify and define related terminology
found in various types of medical case study reports.
3. State acceptable abbreviations for the
most commonly abbreviated medical terms.
4. Define the various body directions.
5. Spell and define the parts and
functions of the human anatomy presented.
6. Spell and define pathologic conditions,
as well as surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures common to each of
the anatomical systems.
7. Demonstrate the use of related
reference materials, such as medical dictionaries, to assist in understanding
medical terminology.
8. Define the role of confidentiality in
working with medical reports.
9. Relate the use of medical terminology
to various professions requiring such a knowledge.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS TO FACILITATE
LEARNING:
1. Lectures, supplemented by diagrams
showing anatomical placement of various medical terms, will be presented by the
instructor. Videotapes will also be
used to supplement course content.
2. In-class learning activities including
term identification, analysis, and word building will be required of the
students.
3. Case study assignments from various
medical reports will be completed by the students and discussed in class.
4. Audiotape exercises and in-class pronunciation
drills will be required of the students in order to develop proper usage of
medical terminology.
5. Students will be expected to complete
reading and review assignments from the text.
6. Evaluation instruments including
spelling tests and content exams will be used to assess learning.

Students will have
the opportunity to earn points throughout the course as follows:
Spelling Test 1: Chapters 5 - 10 100 points
Spelling Test 2: Chapters 11 - 15 100 points
Spelling Test 3: Chapters 16 - 20 100 points

1000 - 900
Total Points= A (90 percent)
899 - 800 Total Points = B (80 percent)
799 - 700 Total Points = C (70 percent)
699 - 600 Total Points = D (60 percent)
599 and below = F
ATTENDANCE POLICIES:
1. Students are expected to attend all
scheduled class sessions. Attendance
records will be maintained by the instructor and recorded at the beginning of
class.
2. Any article summary report submitted
late will be penalized 10 points.
3. Make-up exams are permitted only with
approved extenuating circumstances. Any
exam taken after the designated testing date will be penalized 10 points. Arrangements to take a make-up exam must be
made no later than two class periods following the exam date or the student
will receive a zero for the exam.
4. Make-up spelling tests are allowed only
on the assigned date at the end of the semester. Any spelling test taken late will be penalized 10 points.
CLASSROOM POLICIES:
1. No eating, drinking, or smoking in the
classroom.
2. The established inclement weather
policy for Shawnee Community College will be followed and student should be
familiar with this policy.
3. No children are permitted in class due
to possible disturbances that could have an effect on the classroom learning
environment.
4. No exam grades will be posted within 24
hours of the exam.
