SCC Driver's Safety Training
Some drivers stopped for minor traffic violations will be offered an alternative to appearing in
court due to a Driver Safety Program provided by Shawnee Community College near Ullin. The
counties of Alexander, Jackson, Johnson, Massac, Pulaski and Union are participating in this
program.
Eligible drivers stopped by the police for certain minor traffic violations--only those for which a
court appearance is not mandatory--will be given an application form which will explain the driver
safety class option: Option B - plead guilty, pay the fine and the $25 fee, apply by mail and
participate in the Driver Safety Program. The $25 fee will be used to cover the cost of
administering the program and providing the traffic safety classes. Drivers who complete the
one-time, four-hour class, fulfilling the requirements of court supervision, will not have the
offense reported to the Secretary of State. Drivers must sign an affidavit that they have not
attended traffic school or been under court supervision during the last 12 months.
The classes are offered in various locations, Monday through Thursday from 6 - 10 p.m. and
Saturday from 8 a.m. - noon. The number of classes per month are limited. The four-hour class
uses materials supplied by the National Safety Council
and is available in both English and Spanish.
Drivers from any area who have received a ticket may be eligible for this class. The driver would
need to confirm with the court in the county in which s/he received the ticket. A fee of $25 is
required and a certificate of completion issued at the end of class. This certificate may then be
mailed to the court in which the ticket was received.
