Shawnee Saints Strong at National Invitational
Men's golf teams from throughout the country met at Goose Pond Alabama last week for the 2009 Spring Fling.
The event included 6 of the country's top 10 Division II NJCAA schools and 12 of the top 25 teams. Schools from Michigan, Texas, Georgia, Mississippi, Iowa, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Ohio and Illinois made up the field.
The newly formed, first year Shawnee team finished 12th in the entire tournament, knocking off 7 of the country's top 25 teams.
Coach DW Davis was ecstatic. "These guys did us proud. I heard a lot of the coaches and fans asking 'who are these guys?' We also had four year college scouts showing a lot of interest in our guys. Scholarship offers to four year schools were actually made to golfers Anthony Dempsey and Curtis Mitchell."
The men's team has 4 more spring tournaments, and Davis believes that the Saints can qualify at the May Regional to return to Alabama for the NJCAA National Championship in June.
"These are good young players who are thrilled to be a part of Shawnee College".
