Men and Women's Golf Teams Returning to SCC

Shawnee Community College recently named Don Wayne (D.W.) Davis as the golf coach for the SCC golf team. Golf at SCC will consist of both a women's and men's team. The SCC Board of Trustees announced at their February Board of Trustees Meeting that a total of 16 golf scholarships will be available.

Davis has begun recruiting throughout the district. Coach Davis shared, "We are looking for talented local men and women who are willing to work to improve and build a competitive program. While golf skills will be a focus, that doesn't mean that academics will take a back seat. We want students that consider academic achievement a priority." Davis, a Class A PGA Professional, holds a Masters of Science in Education from Southern Illinois University and teaches golf at clubs throughout the region.

Although Shawnee Community College's main campus is located on 152 acres of rolling hills and woods, the Saint's team will call the Gambit Golf Club in Vienna home. The Gambit houses the only indoor teaching facility in southernmost Illinois and will be a great asset to the team. The Gambit Golf Club Practice and Learning Facility hosts two state-of-the-art golf simulators used for practice, playing, and golf lessons.

Saints Golf Team Signs Two

Logan Smith and Stephanie Wilson have both signed a national letter of intent to play golf at Shawnee Community College in Ullin, Illinois. Logan and Stephanie are the first two members of the 2008 SCC Golf Team. Logan is the son of Dan and Angi Smith. He is currently a senior at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School. He played on the varsity golf team for four years, State Qualifier his junior year, was named All-South and All-Conference his junior and senior years and was named All-State his junior year. He was also captain of the team junior and senior years and earned more than 25 medals during his high school career. Stephanie is the daughter of Scott and Dawn Wilson. She is currently a senior at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School. During high school she participated in basketball, soccer and softball along with other school clubs and community organizations. She intends to major in business at SCC.
