Southeastern Warriors Too Much for Shawnee
12/01/06
DATE: November 29, 2006
LOCATION: Ullin, IL
TEAMS: Southeastern IL 94 @ Shawnee 57
RECORD: 4-4
It was a rough night out for the Saints who faced a veteran squad in Southeastern IL ranked #21 in the nation in the NJCAA division one polls. Desmond Stephens led the Warriors of Southeastern with 27 points connecting on six 3pt. field goals. He was too much for the Saints all night long.
Southeastern jumped out to a 15-0 run before the Saints could respond. Shawnee went down by a large deficit, but made an amazing run to cut the lead to eight. This run was sparked by a huge block by Griffin and finished off with an assist from Phillips to Coleman who made a thunderous dunk on the break. Southeastern IL called a timeout to stop the run and pushed the lead back up before the half. At the half the score was Southeastern IL 48 and the Saints of Shawnee 30.
The second half went much like the first for the Saints. Southeastern continued their sharp shooting while the Saints really never got on track. The Saints shot a dismal 42% from the free-throw line & they were out rebounded & out scored in the paint. The Saints connected on four 3pt. field goals (Spivey 1 & Karn 3). Southeastern IL shot 72% from the free-throw line & connected on twelve 3pt. field goals (Stephens 6, Rivers 4, Oldham & Stewart 1 each).
Coach Sparks comments:
“This was a great early season test facing Southeastern and we can see that we have some things to improve on. We are very young and inexperienced, but there is not excuse for playing hard every possession and competiting on every play. We have a lot of work ahead of us and the sooner we understand that this is not high school the better off we will be. I expect us to bounce back in out next game on Saturday.”
The Saints face West Kentucky Tech on Saturday, December 2nd at home with a 4:00 tip-off.
