A "T" located to the left of the available semester indicates transfer to Murray State University, Southeast Missouri State University, and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale as per articulation agreements. These courses will also transfer to most public four-year institutions in the state of Illinois.

 

ECE 114 CHILD GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

This course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the total development of the young child. This course focuses on the physical, cognitive, language, creative, and social/emotional aspects of the young child’s development. The course content provides knowledge of the different theoretical positions and principles on child development, including Piaget, Erikson, Vygotsky, Skinner and others. It also includes knowledge of the biological, environmental, cultural, and social influences impacting children’s growth and development from conception through age eight. Some study will include early adolescence.

Credit: 3 hours - Three lecture hours per week.

ECE 128 CHILD GUIDANCE/DISCIPLINE

This course reviews the theories and practices of effective methods of guiding children’s behavior both individu all y and as a group. Emphasis is applied to various techniques that promote positive and supportive relationships with and among children. The course content covers teaching behavior, environment manipulation and modification techniques based on the developmental and special needs of children.

Credit: 3 hours - Three lecture hours per week.

ECE 222 CHILDREN'S LITERATURE

T Spring

The purpose of this course is to provide students with the realization that children’s literature is to provide enjoyment and entertainment as well educational value. It will strive to encourage students to help children develop a love of literature and,therefore become lifelong readers of books. Course content will stress that “the love of reading is caught, not taught.” Course content will provide information that will all ow future educators to provide children with appropriate reading models and exposure to well written, appropriate literary works. This course will deal with content (knowledge of children’s books) and with method (how to use those books with children).

Credit: 3 hours - Three lecture hours per week.
