Alternative High School Program

For a student to be admitted into the Shawnee Community College Alternative High School Program, s/he must meet all guideline requirements as follows:

1. The Alternative High School Program is designed to serve out-of-school youths over the age of 16 or adults residing within the college district.
2. In-school youths and students under the age of 16 will be eligible for admission by permission of the school and with approval of the Adult Secondary Education director.
3. Students over the age of 16 who have dropped out of school are eligible for enrollment after a 60 day waiting period. The waiting period may be waived by permission of the high school principal.
4. All students MUST have a referral form signed by the high school principal/counselor.
5. The Adult Secondary Education director will approve admission, retention or re-admission of students to the program.
6. All students must participate in a pre-assessment conference with Adult Secondary Education staff.


Student Participation Agreement
All students accepted into the SCC Alternative High School Program will be provided the following:
Pre-testing and post-testing
Referrals to other agencies when necessary
Communications with student's high school


General Information
1.
Instruction will be individualized and competency based.
2. Classes will meet from 8:30 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. at the following sites:

  • Anna Extension Center
  • Cairo Extension Center
  • Metropolis Extension Center
  • Rustic Campus
3. All students will be considered students of SCC and will have access to college services.
4. Students will be expected to provide their own transportation to and from campus unless other arrangements are made.
5. All students will be expected to abide by all college rules and regulations, in addition to signing a rules agreement.
6. All credit is granted by the local high school.

Objectives of the Alternative High School Program
The purpose and objective of the AHP is to provide a program of education which meets the needs of the students within the district.

After School and Summer School Programs
These classes are offered to stucents who are still enrolled in high school but who have failed classes and are at risk of dropping out of school or not graduating on time. Courses are offered at the main campus and extension centers. Courses are offered at the main campus only, during summer semester. Students must be referred by their high scholl principal or guidance counselor.

Academic Objectives
To teach the student to work independently and cooperatively.
To provide a strong academic program of study.
To teach students to apply themselves and fulfill their responsibilities.
To develop critical thinking and creative skills.
To develop effective skills for communication.
To teach the knowledge and skills required for occupational competence.

Computer Assisted Instruction For:
Basic skills - Individualized and self-paced review of basic skills, math, English and reading.
Mathematics - Algebra and geometry.
Composition and writing skills.
Literature/poetry.
Sciences - Biology, physics, chemistry and anatomy.
