Specific Course Description:

This course is designed to acquaint the student with basic first aid.  Treatments for situations involving breathing problems, shock, soft-tissue injuries, eye injuries, burns, allergic reaction, bleeding and various other health related problems will be covered.  Student will learn how to assess the injured person, activate the Emergency Medical Services system and administer first aid to the ill or injured person.

 

Prerequisites:  None

 

Credit Hours: One (1) semester hour – One lecture hour per week.

 

Textbook(s) and Supporting Materials:

American Red Cross Standard First Aid, The American National Red Cross, 1988.

 

Course Objectives:

The student will:

  • learn how to do a primary and secondary survey of the victim and the scene
  • learn how to properly initiate the EMS
  • demonstrate correctly the skills needed to perform CPR and clear and obstructed airway
  • demonstrate the correct place to control bleeding
  • identify and demonstrate various pulse points
  • define and clearly identify life threatening situations:
  • learn how to care for electrical, chemical and heat burns
  • learn how to care for snake, insect, human, and animal bites/stings
  • learn how to care for fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains
  • demonstrate the correct way to splint the forearm, leg and ankle
  • learn how to care for victim who has swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed a poison
  • learn how to care for a victim of heat/cold emergencies
  • demonstrate some transfer techniques
  • define first aid: the Good Samaritan Law
  • describe their responsibilities in an emergency situation
  • complete course evaluation at the end

Student Expectations:

            1.  Attend class regularly and be on time.

            2.  Read and prepare assignments prior to class. 

            3.  Turn in assignments on time.

            4.  Be prepared for exams over assigned material.  Take tests at regularly                                       scheduled times unless extenuating circumstances interfere.  Quizzes may be                        announced or unannounced.

 

Student Evaluation:

The final grade will be obtained from the quizzes and test given over the instructional period.  Failure to attend any session will result in an F.

 

Office Hours: 

Office hours will be posted on the bulletin board outside the instructor’s office.  Other times are possible by scheduling individual appointments at mutually convenient hours.  Students are encouraged to consult regularly with the instructor regarding class progress or other topics of concern.

 

Inclement Weather Policy:

Become familiar with the inclement weather policy of Shawnee Community College.  It will be read in all classes and posted in the cafeteria or student lounge.

 

Academic Dishonesty or Plagiarism:

Review the college policy regarding academic dishonesty in the Student Handbook.

College Policy:

Administrative policy prohibits the following:  eating, drinking, or using tobacco in the classroom; bringing children or other unauthorized individuals to the classroom.

 

Attendance Policy:

Each student is expected to attend all class meetings.  The student is expected to be on time and ready to begin class with the proper materials at the beginning of each class period.
