Medical Laboratory Technology Associate Degree

The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Associate Degree in Applied Science Program is offered at the community colleges through the Southern Illinois Collegiate Common Market (SICCM). SICCM is a consortium of four Southern Illinois community colleges, SIU at Carbondale, and SIU at Edwardsville.

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) possesses the technical skills to perform a wide range of tests on blood and body fluids. MLT's draw blood, prepare specimens, perform manual tests under the supervision of a physician and/or medical technologist. Employment for the Medical Laboratory Technician may be in hospitals, physician offices or clinical laboratories.

The Medical Laboratory Technology graduate will qualify to take the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry national certification exam. This examination if offered throughout the year in three-month examination periods.

The SICCM/MLT program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students apply for admission to the MLT Program through their home community college. Each college has a predetermined allotment of program spots. Contact the college's Admission Office: Applicants must:

1. Graduated from an approved high school, or shall demonstrate equivalent competency. (G. E. D. examination).
2. Fulfill admission policies for the institution to which application is made. Each participating institution in SICCM has its own admission procedure. Please follow these directions.
3. Meet stated requirements in MLT Program Admission Packet (ASSET, PSB, GPA, etc.)
MLT Program admission is non-discriminatory, but certain personal and physical attributes are key to success in the profession. These may include: good general physical health, good vision (may be corrected), good color vision, and good manual dexterity.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the Medical Technology Program, the graduate must be able to demonstrate entry level competencies for Medical Laboratory Technicians. The graduate should possess the technical skills needed to:

1. Collect, process, and perform analytical tests on biological specimens for analysis.
2. Recognize factors that affect procedures and results and take appropriate corrective actions when indicated.
3. Monitor quality control within predetermined limits.
4. Demonstrate professional conduct and interpersonal communication skills with patients, the public, lab, and other health care professionals while interacting with them in respect to their jobs and patients' care.
5. Apply basic scientific principles to learn new techniques and procedures.
6. Relate lab findings to common disease processes.
7. Recognize and act upon individual needs for continuing education for growth and maintenance of professional competence.
